Requeststhe Secretary-General to submit to the General Assembly at the main part of its fifty-ninth session a comprehensive report on the use, including the conversion, of 300 series contracts, addressing in particular the strategy of the Organization for meeting current and future human resources requirements for peacekeeping missions, taking into account the observations and recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions;

Endorses the observations and recommendations of the Advisory Committee contained in paragraphs 35 to 39 of its report,2 concerning the wholesale conversion, bearing in mind the fact that the General Assembly has taken no decision to support the replacement of the 300 series contracts as a mechanism for the employment of staff in peacekeeping missions;

Decides to suspend the application of the four-year maximum limit for appointments of limited duration under the 300 series of the staff rules in peacekeeping operations, until 31 December 2004, pending a decision by the General Assembly on this matter at its fifty-ninth session.
