At its 3218th meeting, on 26 May 1993, the Council discussed the report of the Committee on the Admission of New Members concerning the application ofEritrea for admission to membership in the United Nations. 1 Resolution 828 (1993)

Decision At the same meeting, following the adoption of resolution 828 (1993 ), the President made the following statement on behalf of the members: 13 "The Security Council has decided to recommend to the General Assembly that Eritrea be admitted as a Member of the United Nations. On behalf of the members of the Security Council, I wish to extend my congratulations to Eritrea on this historic occasion.

"The Council notes with great satisfaction Eritrea's solemn commitment to uphold the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations and to fulfil all the obligations contained therein.

We look forward to the day in the near future when Eritrea will join us as a Member of the United Nations and to working closely with its representatives."

E Application of tl,e Principality of Monaco Decisions At its 3216th meeting, on 25 May 1993, the Council, following the adoption of its agenda, decided to refer the application of the Principality of Monaco for membership in the United Nations 14to the Committee on the Admission of New Members for examination and report, as provided in rule 59 of the provisional rules of procedure.

At its 3219th meeting, on 26 May 1993, the Council discussed the report of the Committee on the Admission of New Members concerning the application of the Principality of Monaco for admission to membership in the United Nations. 15

Having examined the application of the Principality of Monaco for admission to the United Nations,

Recommends to !he General Assembly that the Principality or Monaco be admitted to membership in the United Nations

F Application of tl,e Principality of Andorra Dl"cisions At its 3250th meeting, on 7 July 1993, the Council, following the adoption of its agenda, decided to refer the application of the Principality of Andorra for membership in the United Nations 17to the Commit· tee on the Admission of New Members for examination and report, as provided in rule 59 of the provisional rules of procedure.

Decision At the same meeting, following the adoption of resolution 848 (l 993 ), the President made the following statement on behalf of the members:19 "The Security Council has decided to recommend to the General Assembly that the Principality of Andorra be admitted as a Member of the United Nations. Court of Justice Decision At its 3170th meeting, on 4 February 1993, the Council proceeded with the discussion of the item entitled "Date of an election to fill a vacancy in the International Court of Justice (S/25224)" 2 Resol~tion 805 (1993)

Decides that the election to fill the vacancy shall take place on JO May 1993 at a meeting of the Security Council and at a meeting of the General Assembly at its forty-seventh session.

Adopted unanimously al the 3170th meeting.

Election of a member of the International Court of B.

Justice On 10 May 1993, the Security Council, at its 3209th meeting, and the General Assembly, at the 103rd meeting of its forty-seventh session, elected Mr. Geza Herczegh (Hungary) to the International Court of Justice to fill a vacancy created by the death of Judge Manfred Lachs and the withdrawal by Mr. Krzystof Skubiszewski (Poland) of his candidacy for election to membership in the International Court of Justice.

C Election of five members of the International Court of Justice On 10 November 1993, the Security Council, at its 3309th, 3310th and 3311th meetings, and the General Assembly, at the 51st, 52nd and 53rd meetings of its forty-eighth session, elected five members of the International Court of Justice to fill the vacancies occuring on the expiration of the terms of office of the following judges:

Mr. Shigeru Oda (Japan);

Mr. Ni Zhengyu (China);

Mr. Jens Evensen (Norway);

Mr. Bola Ajibola (Nigeria);

Mr. Geza Herczegh (Hungary).

The following were elected:

Mr. Carl-August Fleischhauer (Germany);

Mr. Geza Herczegh (Hungary);

Mr. Abdul G. Koroma (Sierra Leone).

Mr. Shigeru Oda (Japan);

Mr. Shi Jiuyong (China);
