Expresses its appreciation of the efforts of the Governments of the United States of America and of

The General Assembly, Thailand in helping to bring about this evacuation ;

Recalling that at se\'eral sessions it has considered

Deplores the fact that considerable foreign forces the question of the treatment of people of Indian origin with a significant quantity of arms still remain in the in the Union of South Africa and has adopted resoterritory of the Union of Burma and have failed to lutions on that subject, respond to the declarations of the General Assembly

Having noted the report3 of the United Nations that they should either leave the territory of the Union Good Offices Commission, of Burma or submit to internment;

Fxpresses appreciatin11 of the work and efforts of the Good Offices Commission;

Suggests to the Governments of India, Pakistan and the Union of South Africa that they should seek a solution of the question by direct negotiations;

Suggests, moreover, that the parties concerned should designate a Government, agency or person to facilitate contacts between them and assist them in settling the dispute ;

Decides that, if within the next six months following the date of the present resolution the parties have not reached agreement on the suggestions made in the foregoing paragraphs, the Secretary-General shall designate a person for the purposes specified above;

Requests the Secretary-General to report to the General Assemblv at its ·next regular session on the results obtained. ·
