Welcomes the holding of the Second Association of Southeast Asian Nations-United Nations Summit at United Nations Headquarters on 13 September 2005, chaired jointly by Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi of Malaysia, the rotating Chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Standing Committee and the Secretary-General of the United Nations, and attended by the leaders of the Association, as well as the heads of various United Nations agencies, funds and programmes;

Acknowledges the commitment of the leaders of the Association and the Secretary-General of the United Nations to further broaden cooperation between the Association and the United Nations, in the areas mentioned in the joint communiqué of the Second Association of Southeast Asian Nations-United Nations Summit;

Continues to encourage both the United Nations and the Association to further strengthen and expand their areas of cooperation;

Welcomes the Association as an observer in the General Assembly;

Encourages the United Nations and the Association to convene Association of Southeast Asian Nations-United Nations summits regularly;

Commends the President of the General Assembly, the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the Ministers for Foreign Affairs of the States members of the Association for their efforts to hold regular meetings, on an annual basis, with the presence of the Secretary-General of the Association, during the regular session of the Assembly, with a view to further strengthening the cooperation between the United Nations and the Association;

Takes note of the efforts of the Association to hold meetings with other regional organizations at the fringes of the sessions of the General Assembly to promote cooperation in support of multilateralism;

Requests the Secretary-General to submit to the General Assembly at its sixty-third session a report on the implementation of the present resolution;

Decides to include in the provisional agenda of its sixty-third session the sub-item entitled “Cooperation between the United Nations and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations”.
