Takes note with appreciation ofthe report ofthe Secretary-GeneraJ29 on the implementation of the programme of the International Y ear of Peace;

Affirms that peace is a fundamental element of human existence, that its promotion is one of the primary purposes of the United Nations and that its attainment is the common ideal of ali the peoples of the world;

Expresses its appreciátion to the Secretary-General and the secretariat of the International Y ear of Peace for ali the activities undertaken in implementation of the programme of the Year, as well as for the recognition conferred by the Secretary-General on international and national non-governmental organizations and on cities through the award to them of "Peace Messenger" certificates;

Expresses its appreciation to Member States, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations and the international community as a whole for the enthusiastic welcome extended to the programme of the International Y ear of Peace and for the efforts made to promote it;

Urges Member States, intergovernmental and nongovernmental organizations and the world community to persevere in those efforts, developing initiatives conducive to the objectives of the Year, and to join the United Nations in its noble purpose of ensuring that humanity reaches the threshold ofthe twenty-first century in the full enjoyment of a stable and lasting peace;

Requests the Secretary-General to invite Member States and interested organizations to inform the Secretariat of their activities and initiatives in pursuit of those ends, and to submit a report on important new developments throughout the world to the General Assembly at its forty-fourth session under an item entitled "Achievements of the International Year of Peace";

Expresses the hope that the ideals and objectives contained in the Proclamation of the International Year of

Peace will continue to be an inspiration for concerted action during the closing years of this century which may materialize the vision ofthe year 2000 as the starting-point of a new era in international relations.
