Considering that one of the purposes of the United Nations, as stated in Articles I and 55 ofthe Charter, is to promote universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms without distinction of any kind, including distinction as to sex,
Reaffirming that women and roen should, on a basis of equality, participa te in and con tribute to the social, economic and political processes of development and should share equally in improved conditions of life,
Recalling its resolution 34/ l 80 of 18 December 1979, by which it adopted the Convention on the Elimination of Ali Forros of Discrimination against Women,
Recalling a/so its resolutions 35/140 of 11 December 1980, 36/131 of 14 December 1981 and 37/64 of 3 Decerober 1982, as well as Economic and Social Council resolution 1983/1 of 17 May 1983,
Taking note of the report of the Secretary-General on the status of the Convention, 142
Having considered the report of the Comroittee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women on its first session, 143 l. Notes with appreciation the increasing number of Member States that have ratified or acceded to the Convention on the Eliroination of Ali Forros of Discrimination against Womcn;

InvitesStatcs that have not yct done so to become partics to the Convcntion by ratifying or acceding to it;

Takes note of the report of the Committec on the Elimination of Discrimination against Womcn on its first session;

Welcomes thc fact that thc Committec on the Elimination of Discrimination against Womcn has successfully started its work and, ínter afia, has adopted general guidelines regarding the forro and contents of reports received from States parties under article 18 of the Convention;

Requeststhe Secretary-General to submit to the General Assembly at its thirty-ninth session a report on the status of the Convention.
